Women-Owned Businesses Continue to Climb
An American Express OPEN study found that the rate of growth of women-owned businesses is rising—at 1.5 times the national average. Between 1997 and 2012, the number of businesses overall increased by 37 percent, while the number of women-owned businesses increased by 54 percent. There are more than 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the country, which generate almost $1.3 trillion in revenue and employ 7.7 million people. The New York City metro area currently has 670,100 women-owned businesses, more than any other metro area in the US. The area also experienced approximately a 31 percent growth in number of firms and revenue from 2002 to 2012.
